Lots of ongoing confusion about this it seems -- I recall when we configured our present 2007 Mini there was an on again/off again mention of such an adapter but the dealer knew nothing. Of course the stock sound system has an aux-in jack crammed under the center stack so that could certainly be used for an adapter but how awkward would that be?
Anyway check out this story from motoringfile.com with several pdf files regarding adapters.
OK I suppose someone actually spent serious quality time coming up with this goofy idea but try and put a bag of groceries on the front seat without first locking the seatbelt and you'll see what I mean. Even my laptop computer will set off the seatbelt warning chime.
